How do you feel about change – Good or Bad?

Not everyone likes change.  Change can be hard, but change can also be what someone needs to keep life interesting.

A big change happened for me in August.  I am now the Firm Operations Manager and Senior Law Clerk, and while I knew I was heading down this path, it was still a bit scary when the time came to actually take this step.

You always have to be careful when changes are made to employment.  An employer can’t just unilaterally make substantial changes to your job description or your compensation without your consent.  If they do, this could be considered constructive dismissal.

What can be considered substantial changes?

  • A decrease in your salary and an increase/decrease in hours
  • A demotion in your job title and a decrease in duties
  • Relocating your place of work

If your employer wants to make changes to your employment, you should always review the proposed changes. If you are unsure of your rights, consult a lawyer for legal advice to ensure you are protected.

While at first I was a bit nervous about the change in my job, I think I’m embracing it and falling right into the new role, and I look forward to this new adventure.  See, change can be good.
